In 2007 Impact Science began working with Biocant, Portugal to evaluate and manage the IP portfolio it was actively generating. Biocant operates ‘state of the art’ R&D facilities, with a focus on biotechnology, and has active collaborations with major universities and industry partners. Biocant is also home to a growing cluster of international biotech business and draws upon the wealth of high-quality research and management from Portugal, Europe and overseas.
Initially, Impact Science evaluated Biocant’s R&D projects to identify any significant IP and the relative merits of each project, with respect to commercial value. Working with our client, we identified the highest priority projects, and worked to protect and commercialise the associated IP.
Impact Science now provides continuous IP portfolio support for Biocant, including: evaluation of the potential market value for new IP; drafting specifications that are suitable for patent applications; working with a range of patent attorneys to establish robust patent applications, and; managing the downstream patenting process on behalf of the client, including notices of patent office actions, and co-ordinating suitable responses.
We have managed Biocant’s growing patent portfolio for more than 4 years, taking the original filings beyond PCT and National Phases. This portfolio has been utilised through commercial licensing and by a spin-out company which has been in operation since 2009.
